Lee Daniels’ The Butler is somewhat based on the real life experiences of Eugene Allen (roleplay by Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines). The main character of an American butler, who has seen the notable events of 20th House.
The story revolves around the life of Cecil Gaines who was raised on a cotton plantation in Georgia. With the catastrophic start of his childhood because of rape of his mother and murder of his father, the teen gets hired in a pastry shop, leading him to the White House.
Later in the life, Cecil Gaines recounts the experience of a husband and father. The film also contains the motivating events like civil rights movements. Principal photography started in the month of July of 2012 in New Orleans. Production was delayed from its scheduled because of Hurricane Isaac. Later the production was started in November 2012.
The film was a box office success, grossing over $161 million compared to budget of $30 million. Released by the Weinstein Company in august of 2013, the film received positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a rating of 73% based on 162 reviews, saying the film was emotionally affecting. The Metacritic gave the score of 66 to the film based on 47 reviews. Most of the credit was gone to Whitaker. Rolling stone lauded about Whitaker that his reflective and powerfully understated performance was behind the film’s huge success. Lee Daniels’ The Butler won the best director award for Lee Daniels.
